Venison Season

The weather is getting cooler, but the good news is that it is venison season!  Wild venison is a seasonal product, due to the mating season and is generally only available between September and April. We source ours from a private parkland in Charnwood Forest.  If you would like advice on which cut is best for you, how to cook your venison or how much you require for your number of diners, please do not hesitate to ask our butchers in store. They are always happy to help.

Wild deer live on grass their whole lives with virtually no interference from humans which is reflective in the delicious, rich flavour of their meat. Venison has a high source of protein and iron and low saturated fat content compared to other meats making it an excellent, healthy choice.

There are so many delicious venison recipes on the internet and in cookery books. We recommend venison stew, made with red wine, juniper berries and redcurrant jelly. Another favourite recipe of ours is a rack of venison or rolled joint of venison with a blackberry and port jus, served with roasted root vegetables. The venison burgers and sausages are also a great alternative to the usual varieties and make a great economical choice. Why not try some whilst it is in stock?
